ABOUT THE TEAM

The Xploratory lab runs with a lead team of staff from the RCA Service design department constantly working alongside students and graduates from the RCA Service Design course as well our advisers and partners for each lab.

Clive Grinyer

Head of Service Design at RCA.

Clive is an acknowledged expert in service design, design thinking and digital and technology innovation who has led award-winning design teams for companies around the globe.

Clive started in design consultancy Ideo in London and San Francisco before co-founding design company Tangerine with Martin Darbyshire and future Apple design chief and RCA Chancellor Jony Ive. He went onto build and lead design teams for Orange, Samsung and Cisco and was Director of Service Design at Barclays.

As Director for Design at the Design Council, he created the Design Demand programme taking design into over a thousand UK companies and as a consultant has worked with the Cabinet Office Policy Lab and at Nesta. He has been a visiting lecturer at the RCA since 2017.

In 2018 Clive was named in Creative Review’s Top 50 as ‘a passionate advocate for the transformational potential of design for some three decades.’

Clive speaks at national and international conferences, writes articles and blogs and has published Smart Design, a book on design and technology. He was a trustee of the Royal Society of Arts and is Chair of the DBA Design Effectiveness Awards.

Dr. Nick de Leon

Education and Knowledge Exchange Lead at RCA Design School (Former Head of Service Design at RCA, 2019).

Nick is Executive Education and Knowledge Exchange Lead in the School of Design, where he leads the development of the School’s research and knowledge exchange relations.

Nick received his PhD from Imperial College Business School, where his research addressed the impact of information and communication technologies on the social and economic vitality of cities. Nick has an engineering degree from Imperial College and a Master’s degree in Industrial Design from the Royal College of Art.

He began his career as an industrial designer at IBM, moving from designing products and services, through to developing entire new businesses in his role as Business Development Director for IBM’s Global Services division in Europe. He led the NESTA-funded joint venture between the RCA and Imperial College London, Design London, as director from 2007 to 2011.

Dr. Nicolas Rebolledo

Head of Xploratory Lab. Tutor and Lecturer at RCA Service Design.

Dr. Nicolás Rebolledo is a service and strategic designer based in London. His academic and professional practice is concerned with the development and implementation of design-led service innovation processes. An architect from the Catholic University of Chile, he holds an MSc in Technology Entrepreneurship from University College London (UCL) and a PhD in Service Design from the Royal College of Art. He is the co-founder of UNIT, the strategic and service design unit behind the inception and first innovation strategy of the Laboratorio de Gobierno de Chile.

He is Tutor in Service Design and Head of Xploratory Lab, the live lab of Service Design at the Royal College of Art. He has been teaching fellow at UCL School of Management, tutor at London Business School and visiting lecturer for executive education at Imperial College Business School. He also works as an independent consultant for a diverse range of start-ups, private companies, charities, public institutions and international organisations such as IDB, OECD, British Council, VISA and Amazon.

John Makepeace

Design Research Lead of xploratory lab. Tutor, Visiting Lecturer and Research Associate at RCA Service Design.

John is an experienced Service Design Strategist who has worked across public, private and Third sector environments for the past ten years, bringing a wide range of design practises to human-centred innovation approaches. A UK-based design researcher, he holds an MA in Service Design from the Royal College of Art.

In his work he aims to bring about positive social impact by working inclusively on complex systemic challenges. He works top down and bottom up, from macro scale to micro scale, challenging assumptions and imagining and developing solutions.

At the RCA he works as a Research Associate and Tutor to the Service Design masters course and is Design Research Lead at Xploratory, the live lab of the Service Design course. In this role John manages a small research team that develops design-led innovation practice by working with students, start-ups, private companies, charities and public institutions to explore big societal shifts and tackle public problems ranging from climate change to mental health.

Head of Service Innovation at Koa Health (Formerly Telefonica Alpha).

Anna is the Head of Service innovation at Koa Health, a spinoff from Telefonica moon-shot arm working on innovations with big societal impact.

Anna’s expertise is in design thinking and user driven service innovation, developing new health products at the intersection of new technologies, scientific impact and what people love.

She is originally from Finland, holds an MA from the Royal College of Art in London and is now based in Barcelona.

VP of Product at Koa Health (Formerly Telefonica Alpha)

Remko is VP of Product (Innovation) at Koa Health (A digital mental health company, formerly Telefonica Alpha).

He is passionate about creating new companies, products and services integrating the best of scientific research, user insights, design and development to get the best products and services with cross disciplinary teams using lean startup, service design and design thinking.
